Controversial Falling Man NFT on GameStop NFT Marketplace
The 'FallingMan' NFT listed on the GameStop Marketplace is another example of NFTs getting almost out of control.
Less than a week after launch, the GameStop NFT marketplace is already causing controversy. Of the NFTs listed on the platform, one dubbed "Falling Man", "Web3isGoingGreat" was spotted. And the title of this "piece" really refers to what you believe. This is one of the most iconic photographs of the 21st century.
The Falling Man NFT is listed on the GameStop Marketplace.
"Falling Man" is one of a series of photographs taken by Associated Press photojournalist Richard Drew on the morning of January 11, 2001. It is estimated that at least eight of the 100 people who died in and around the World Trade Center on the same day jumped off the tower while it was still standing.
Additional examples of how NFTs are almost out of control
"Probably this fell off the Mir station," says the NFT description, referring to the decommissioning of Russia's space station.
The creator of this coin has sold 0,65 different versions of Falling Man, 990 of which are priced at 3 Ethereum or around $2,25. As Web2 points out in Going Great, GameStop chooses the NFTs the platform references.
Artists must go through a selection process in order to put their work up for sale. The company then takes a 100% commission on sales. GameStop declined to respond to Engadget's request for this.
Art theft is a major problem in the NFT space. Plagiarism and counterfeiting are rampant on platforms like OpenSea where people can create tokens for free.
The Falling Man NFT does not fit into any of these categories, and while it can be rightly argued that artists should be free to refer to past works and tragedies, this NFT diminishes the final moments of a person's life. You should also be aware that To very little other than profit from them.
The Falling Man NFT is no longer listed on GameStop's marketplace. The company has yet to return Engadget's request for comment or tweet about the takedown. However, in a direct message to one individual, the company said it was taking action against the creator of the NFT. "This NFT will be removed from our marketplace entirely," the company said. "This user has already had their minting ability removed from their account, and we have already been in direct contact with the creator about these actions."
